The Tortoise and the Hare

ABSTRACT

As we observe the computing environments of today we marvel at the tremendous strides made in the last few years. Is it possible that te physics of semiconductors will have real limitations on machine performance? This talk will review some of the early computing ideas and extend them into the modern era and into the future. One can only wonder if the hare will stop to ponder his fate and be passed by the tortoise. Further, the need to understand the computational aspects of program development places enormous burden on the human understanding of hardware and code. Computational science is merging of computer science, numerical analysis, computer engineering, and the "science" of application. A real world problem is dissected using this paradigm of computational science and compared to other known methods.
