ABSTRACT

This lecture deals with an interesting history of the discovery of solitons which originated from a physical experiment of Scott Russell and from mathematical computations of Kruskal and Zabusky in 1965. Special attention will be given to the solution of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the interactions of two or more solitons. In addition, some computational results concerning the interaction of solitons will be discussed. The inverse scattering transform, conservation laws and nonlinear superposition principle may be mentioned at the end.
