1.   Assignment #1

I ask you that you introduce yourself to your fellow students and to me in a couple of words. Aside from the fact that this is a courtesy assignment, it is also meant to acquaint you with some of the features of WebCT that you must be conversant with: the Bulletin Board, MAIL and Assignment Dropbox.

The assignment is to be submitted in three ways (let’s call them “steps”):

Step 1. Post it as a message on the “Student Introductions” topic on the Bulletin Board.

·      no special requirements as far as format is concerned

·      the message should  be posted on the “Student Introductions” topic

Step 2. Mail to me, either as a message or as an attachment.

·      no special requirements as far as format is concerned

·      the message should  be addressed to me only not to other students.

Step 3. Submit it as an Assignment in the Assignment Dropbox.

·      Use your last name as the base for the file name. Use ‘1’ as a reminder that this is the first assignment.

For example, If your name is Jan Smith, and you choose to submit the assignment as Word and as text file, the names of your two submission files should be:

smith1.doc

smith1.txt

·      I have had numerous problems reading student submissions of assignments to the assignment dropbox. This assignment is meant to familiarize you with everything you need to do in order for me to be able to read your assignments successfully. These are nit-picky requirements but I urge you to take them seriously and literally - if you submit an assignment that I cannot read on my computer, it is as good as not submitted. This assignment is meant to establish a basic communication plane between our computers.

Important comment: programming assignments should be submitted as text files.

1.1.     Deadline

For the due-date of the first assignment see Deadlines.

1.2.     Grading

This is a pass/fail assignment - it does not formally count toward your final grade. However, if you fail it (either fail it after submitting it or do not submit it), you thereby revoke your right to claim my help with your “real” assignmetn submission. For example, I will assign low priority to helping someone who has failed the first assignment (e.g. by not bothering to submit it) and who later has problems with submitting the assignment. I will (probably) still help if there is time, but I will certainly grant no extensions. Essentially I read your failing on the first assignment as expressive of an “I don’t care” attitude on your part

Repetition (of Step 3)

If you fail the assignment the first time, you can repeat it. In order to do so, however, I must reset your first attempt or else you will not be able to do it. So, you need to Mail me that you want to repeat it.
