The course has two goals. First, to teach you how to program in Fortran 95. Second, to introduce you to the most basic issues in, broadly understood, scientific computing. In this way the course can also serve as a preparation to the further explorations in computational methods of solving mathematical problems found in courses dealing with Numerical Methods.
This course is the first attempt at running it with the WebCT support so I expect we will run into a number of glitches and your understanding and help are highly appreciated.
Modern computing is a discipline that is very much a team effort and requires very good communication skills. This being the case, since WebCT provides apopriate support mechanisms I will find ways to encourage your working on communication abilities.

Due to my professional involvement in a number of activities I may need to travel from time to time. Since this course is supported by WebCT, there will be no interruptions in our progress through the material. If I am to leave you for a class period I will assign material that you are to study and then I will participate in class virtually through the bulletin board and e-mail. There exists a possibility of occasional problems that do occur due to interruptions in one connection or other. They usually disappear fast. To avoid some of them I provide you with two e-mail addresses. In case of emergency please use both of them simultaneously.
Now, my absence also means that occasionally you might need to wait 1 or 2 days before your query is answered. This should not be too great a problem since I will make sure to be around for deadlines.
