Midi Protocol, Applications, and Physical Modeling Synthesis

Last wednesday, Dr. Hugh Garraway from the deparment of Computer Science and Statistics give us a lecture on Midi protocol and application.

Dr. Garraway first gave us a brief introduction about the MIDI and its history. He talked about from early electronic music in 1919 to switched-on Bash that invented by W. Carlos in 1968. And then he described the hardware and software protocol standardization used in Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI).

Dr. Garraway also introduced the concept physical modeling synthesis. A MIDI synthesizer is a elctronic device for making music sound. He talked about how to utilize the synthesizer to record and play the sound by various musical instruments. At last, He gave a short performance using MIDI sequencing and live performance with a virtual acoustic tone generator. The generator used the technique of physical modeling. The play is wonderful.
