Simulation of Microstructural Evolution in Sintering by the Method of Lines

Last Wednesday, Dr. Wen Zhang from Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Louisiana Tech University gave us a seminar about the simulation of microstructural evolution bye the Sintering process.

Sintering is a widely used material manufacturing process. From a Microstructural point of view, the process can be essentially modeled by a surface and a grain boundary diffusion. The mathematical model involves a high order nonlinear time dependent PDE with a moving boundary. Dr. Zhang's research extend the model to cover complex particle geometry and build up a computational model suitable for using method of lines.

The theory foundation of the simulation is come from the yang's theory. Dr. Zhang gave various of example on different particle layouts. For example, particles are in different shapes and different sizes. Various numerical computation results were also discussed.
