last Wednesday, Dr. Igor Shulmangiave gave us a lecture on Application of data assimilation techniques in physical oceanography. Dr. Igor Shulmangiave first gave the introduction of the assimilation techniques in physical oceanography. and then he talked about three cases of application of the data assimilation techniques.

Afterwoards, Dr. Igor Shulmangiave discussed the type of data. They are:

• High spatial resolution but low temporal resolution
• High spatial temporal resolution over small area
• High temporal at single point

Dr. Igor Shulmangiave also talked about the KALMAN FILTER(KF) AND optimum interpolation(OI).

He described the Simplification and order reduction method in details. There are some of problems which we should know about:

• the fit of feature models
• the dynamic method conservation of potential verticity
• the statistical methods and the regression method
• the local inversion
• the use of a coarse grid for the filter variational method

And then he talked about the assimilation scheme and the approaches. The approach is to use energy integrals derived from the model are used to constrain subsurface fields estimatied.

He then discussed the optimum problems:

• conservation of kinetic energy
• conservation of potential energy
• conservation of potential velocity

At last Dr. Igor Shulmangiave show some the result of numerical experiments.
