(Description of Seminar 13)
Nov. 24, 1997
On last wednesday, Dr. Wen Zhang gave us a lecture about Simulation of Microstructural Evolution in Sintering by the Method of Lines. Dr. Wen Zhang is a faculty member of Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Louisiana Tech University.
Dr. Zhang first introduced the concept of sintering. She presented the visual examples of the process of sintering powder. After that she gave some detail information on the numerical methods used in the process.
Sintering is a widely used material manufacturing process. From a Microstructural point of view, the process can be essentially modeled by a surface and a grain boundary diffusion. The mathematical model involves a high order nonlinear time dependent PDE with a moving boundary.
Dr. Zhang extended the model to cover complex particle geometry and build up a computational model suitable for using method of lines. Dr. Zhang presented and discussed Various numerical and simulation results along with lots of graphics.
