ABSTRACT

A brief discussion of the existing data assimilation techniques in numerical modeling of oceanic processes will be given. The talk will be focused on three cases of application of the data assimilation techniques.

  1. Assimilation of satellite altimetry data into the NRL layered ocean model (research has been done together with Dr. Smetstad of PSI, Inc., and the DART group of NRL);
  2. Assimilation of HF Doppler radar data into the hydrodynamical model of the Monterey Bay (research has been done together with Dr. Lewis of Ocean Physics Research and Development, and Dr. Blumberg of HydroQual, Inc.);
  3. Development of optimized open boundary conditions for modeling limited area coastal models (research has been done together with Dr. Lewis of Ocean Physics Research and Development, and Mr. Mayer, Ph. D. student of Scientific Computing Program, USM).

For all three cases, the approach, the numerical model and the results of numerical experiments will be discussed and presented.
